Originally a true love story
It all started with Kim Casali's timid love notes to her future husband, Roberto. Each of these little notes involved a little drawing and personal sentiment that perfectly captured Kim's thoughts for the man she loved. She hid these little drawings where she would least expect them, sometimes stuffed in a pocket or tucked under her pillow, and she also sent them to him whenever they were apart.
Love Is... in stages
1941 - Marilyn (later Kim) Grove was born in Auckland, New Zealand.
1967 - A week after Valentine's Day, Kim meets Roberto Casali at a ski club meeting in Los Angeles.
1967 -The first illustration of what will become "Love Is ..." is drawn by Kim on a postcard she sends to Roberto on a ski trip. She's a miniature caricature of herself: a mini Kim. Kim later names the company responsible for exploiting her creation, Minikim.
1967 -Kim scribbles caricatures of herself and Roberto on notes that she leaves in various places for him to find (such as under her pillow, in her jacket pocket, in the glove compartment of her car, in a drawer).
1968-While working as a receptionist at a print shop in Los Angeles, Kim stitches together some of her illustrations into small booklets, titling them "Love is When" and selling them off her desk for $1 each.
1969 - Following positive feedback after one of his booklets was given as "THE" wedding gift for which the bride and guests deem it a "must-have" for each bride, Roberto takes a collection of Kim's cartoons to a newspaper syndicate to gauge their interest.
1970 - January 5 ? ?Love Is?? first appears in the Los Angeles Times newspaper. It's a quick success and grows to be featured in newspapers and magazines in over 50 countries and translated into more than 25 languages.
1970 - The first licensed product with "Love Is..." appears: plastic wall plaques.
1970 - November ? Kim and Roberto get engaged.
1971 - July ? Kim and Roberto get married in Auckland, New Zealand. Their honeymoon will be in Tahiti.
