The story of Avirex is that of a small factory in Long Island, NY, which produced a small number of leather jackets for the US Navy, Air Force and military.
There is no certain date that certifies the start of production but from some documents it can be deduced that the activity began between the two wars.
In the 60s, due to the increase in production costs, the US Navy Aviation suspended the purchase of the G1, one of the life jackets supplied by Avirex. In the same years he also canceled the purchase of two other jacket models: A1 and B3. Following the loss of this important customer, the small factory was in danger of closing its doors.
Luckily, in the mid-1970s, an Arizona lawyer thought about marketing Air Force leather jackets to the general public. This idea allowed the factory to get new orders and start production again. The Avirex brand was registered and from 1975 it was reborn on a commercial level.
The name 'Avirex' derives from the union of two Latin terms: avis, birds, and rex, king, and besides being a clear reference to aviation, it wanted to underline the high quality level of the materials used and the mastery in the craftsmanship.
The first challenge that the reborn factory had to face was to create jackets in which the leather had a lived-in look and thus satisfy the new fashion trends of the time. The leather aging treatment devised by Avirex was unprecedented and allowed it to become the first company in the world to produce vintage-looking leather jackets.
Subsequently, the production of jackets was accompanied by the creation and marketing of the famous chinos.
The Avirex Civilian and Military Tailors line completes the project today with a real collection that translates the historical matrix of the brand. Entirely designed, produced and distributed from the Milan headquarters, Avirex Civilian and Military Tailors emphasizes the authentic values of the brand: belonging to the American world, military inspiration, historical contents. It offers an informal style, a comfortable fit, high quality materials and handcrafted details for a man who loves, at the same time, a refined but discreet, elegant and casual style.
